Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) – Driving Growth in South Africa’s Tourism Sector

As one of the largest contributors to South Africa’s GDP, the tourism sector provides significant employment and enterprise development opportunities. Consequently, the Department of Tourism established the Tourism Equity Fund (TEF) to promote growth and transformation in the sector, in alignment with the Tourism B-BBEE sector codes. The Fund actively addresses funding challenges faced by enterprises in tourism, thereby stimulating job creation across the country.

The TEF provides blended finance support, which includes loans from SEFA and other financiers, as well as grant funding from the Department of Tourism. Therefore, enterprises can access both financial and strategic support to grow their operations. To develop a compliant application and access the Fund, contact DTC today.

Application Process for the Tourism Equity Fund

Applicants must submit their applications online through the SEFA website. Initially, the system screens applications against qualifying criteria and eligibility. Those meeting pre-screening requirements proceed to full due diligence. During this stage, evaluators assess financial viability, growth potential, and sustainability. Additionally, they verify processes, systems, and operational capabilities against supporting documentation.

After completing due diligence successfully, the Fund considers applications for approval. It is important to note that TEF approvals depend on the availability of funds. Therefore, early application and careful preparation significantly increase the chances of receiving support.
