The Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA)
The Small Enterprise Finance Agency (SEFA) provides development finance to SMMEs and Co-operatives that cannot attract commercial credit. The agency provides loans directly to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and cooperatives operating in all sectors of the economy. The facilities range from a minimum of R50 000 to a maximum of R15 million.
The National Empowerment Fund (NEF)
The NEF provides funds to black entrepreneurs and groups with the aim of facilitating access to finance in support of Broad-Based BEE in terms of government legislation. The investment activities of the NEF are guided by an investment policy that seeks to ensure that investments create real economic empowerment for black people without deviating from sound economic principles. The funding parameters start from R250 000 to up to R75 million.
Business Partners Limited
Business Partners is an investment company for small and medium enterprises. The company invests between R250 000 and R50 million in businesses across all sectors, with the exception of farming, on-lending, and non-profit organisations.
Investment financing is offered for businesses at all stages of development, including start-ups, expansions, outright purchases, management buy-outs, management buy-ins, franchises, tenders, and contracts. The company also manages a number of specialist funds, which provide investment financing for defined-profile entrepreneurs.
The Isivande Women’s Fund (IWF)
The Isivande Women’s Fund (IWF) is an exclusive fund that aims to accelerate women’s economic empowerment by providing more affordable, usable, and responsive finance than what is currently available. The IWF targets formally registered, that are 50% + 1 share women-owned and/or managed enterprises that have been in existence and operating for at least six months, with a loan range of R30 000 up to R2 million.
Commercial Banks
The commercial banks have specialist SME divisions, providing finance for qualifying entrepreneurs. Within a South African context, these include Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, and First National Bank.
