Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) Grant – Supporting Arts, Culture, and Heritage

Launched by the Department of Sport, Arts, and Culture, the Mzansi Golden Economy strategy aims to increase economic growth and create jobs in South Africa. Moreover, the strategy considers the arts, culture, and heritage sector as the “new gold,” which has the potential to become a key market player in the national economy. Therefore, the Department uses this grant to advance its vision of an active, creative, winning, and socially cohesive nation. Furthermore, this initiative supports entrepreneurs, artists, and cultural organisations across the country.

Focus Areas of the MGE Grant

The programme focuses on several areas, including the Public Art Programme, Cultural Events, the Art Bank, and the Sourcing Enterprise. Additionally, the workstreams within the programme include cultural events, public art, and touring ventures. Consequently, applicants can identify which funding stream best aligns with their projects.

Objectives of the MGE

1. Stimulate Demand
By expanding supply and creating work opportunities, the programme stimulates demand. Therefore, projects within the focus areas—Public Art, Cultural Events, Art Bank, and Sourcing Enterprise—receive targeted support. As a result, more South Africans can benefit from job creation and sector growth.

2. Audience Development and Consumption
The programme aims to elevate existing initiatives into large-scale national projects. Consequently, it develops audiences for the creative and cultural industries and increases consumption of sector offerings. In addition, it encourages local communities to actively engage with arts and culture.

3. Building Heritage Resources
The MGE develops heritage areas to address colonial and apartheid biases in exhibition and interpretation. Key focus areas include Heritage Projects, the National Liberation Heritage Route, and Marine Heritage. Moreover, these initiatives foster national pride and social cohesion.

4. Information Gathering
The programme collects evidence and analyses sector performance. This data informs policy decisions and guides future resource allocation. Additionally, it helps to identify gaps and opportunities for further inv

estment.

5. Human Capital Development
The MGE identifies and develops talent early and influences career choices. Its focus areas include Arts Education and the National Cultural Industries Skills Academy. Furthermore, it encourages mentorship, internships, and training to prepare youth for sustainable careers in the sector.

Eligibility and Application

Assistance from the MGE depends on the current needs and emerging challenges of the arts, culture, and heritage sectors. In addition, funding is awarded based on the merits of submitted applications. Applications are reviewed for eligibility and completeness; therefore, no applicant automatically receives funding. Support is provided to projects implemented from April 2024 to March 2025.
