Essential Services Business Permit
An Essential Services Business Permit is mandatory for businesses that need to stay open during lockdown. Specifically, the President of South Africa declared a National Lockdown from 26th March 2020 until 30th April 2020. Consequently, only businesses that provide essential services are allowed to open and trade. These businesses must apply for a permit to operate legally. Moreover, supplying incorrect information constitutes a criminal offense and may lead to prosecution.
Furthermore, all enterprises operating within the borders of the Republic of South Africa are expected to remain closed during the lockdown period. However, enterprises that produce, provide, or distribute goods and services listed in the regulation issued under the Disaster Management Act are exempt from these restrictions. In addition, businesses must ensure they operate with only the absolute minimum staff necessary to maintain safe operations.
