Evolution I
Launched in 2008, the Evolution I Fund became Africa’s first dedicated clean energy infrastructure and environmental sector fund. This 10-year closed-ended fund raised USD 90 million in commitments and targeted equity and equity-related investments across two principal themes. Notably, it focused on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, with a minimum 65% allocated to South Africa. Evolution I made 12 investments and achieved top-quartile performance for similar 2008 vintage specialised funds. Finally, the fund concluded its activities in 2022.
Evolution II
Evolution II, a 2017 vintage 10-year closed-ended fund, raised USD 216 million in commitments. It primarily targets equity and equity-related investments in two principal streams: infrastructure-type development and project finance in clean and sustainable energy, and growth equity investments in energy and resource efficiency companies, including their supporting value chains. Furthermore, the fund invests in sub-Saharan African countries that offer strong growth prospects, regulatory certainty, political stability, and bankable investment opportunities.
In addition, Evolution II addresses the need to replace aging, carbon-intensive power plants and contributes to building low-carbon, cost-effective energy generation capacity. It also improves energy and resource efficiency across key business sectors in sub-Saharan Africa, where energy and resource insecurity is growing.
Evolution III
Evolution III, targeted for launch in late 2022, refines Inspired Evolution’s offering. Its Net Zero funds respond to Africa’s increasingly sophisticated energy landscape. The fund leverages the team’s experience as pioneering investment advisors to maintain a leading position in the sector.
